What Ifá Teaches Us About the True Meaning of Giving During Christmas
Why Giving to Your Orí Might Be the Most Powerful Christmas Gift You Offer This Year
Dear devotees of the sacred mysteries,
As December blankets the world in lights and expectations, many among us feel both the joy and the pressure of giving. In Christian traditions, Christmas celebrates the birth of divine promise. In Ifá, we are reminded that the greatest promise lies within: our Orí—the divine self that walked with Ọlódùmarè before birth and chose this life.
So what happens when we give—not just to others, but to Orí?
Let us journey into the heart of the sacred.
A Gift or an Offering?
In everyday language, “giving” is noble. But in the cosmology of Ifá, we distinguish between a gift (ìbá) and an offering(ebó).
A gift is freely given, with affection.
An ebó is given with intention, to shift energy, to repair alignment, to open roads.
Òrúnmìlà himself teaches this in Ogbe Meji, where we learn that even wisdom must be nourished to manifest. In the path where Òrúnmìlà gives offerings to avoid disgrace and preserve his voice as Babaláwo, he declares:
“He who forgets to feed his Orí shall walk in circles.”
At Christmas, we often exchange gifts. But Ifá teaches us that true transformation comes when we make a conscious offering to Orí—not out of obligation, but out of recognition that our Ori inu, our inner head, is the compass of our life.
The Myth: Orí and the Power of Choosing Well
In Otura Meji, we find a story of Orunmila divining for himself before a long journey. His Ori warns him: “Many roads lead outward, but only one leads home.” He performs ebó, feeds his Orí, and listens—not to his ego, but to the wisdom within.
Because of this, he avoids betrayal and reaches his destination in peace.
This tale reminds us: when we honor our Ori, we access clarity. When we feed our Ori, we choose growth over illusion.
DIY CHRISTMAS RITUAL: Offering for Prosperity & Inner Alignment
This ritual is simple, respectful, and can be done at home—preferably on the morning of December 24 or 25.
🌿 You will need:
1 small white plate or bowl
1 boiled yam (or cooked rice if yam is unavailable)
1 tablespoon of red palm oil
1 coin (preferably shiny, new, or symbolic to you)
Water in a clean glass
A quiet space
📜 Steps:
Sit in silence. Breathe deeply. Center yourself.
Place the food on the plate. Drizzle it with palm oil.
Place the coin atop the offering.
Raise the water glass and speak aloud:
“Ori mi, I thank you for walking with me through this year.
As I give, I align.
As I offer, I receive.
May my path in the year to come be clear, strong, and guided by you.”
Touch your forehead lightly three times and pour a small sip of the water on the ground (or into a plant), saying:
“Ẹsẹ Orí mi. Àṣẹ.”
Leave the food offering outdoors or under a tree, with the coin buried beneath it or later gifted to someone in need.
Final Reflection: What You Feed Will Guide You
As you close the year and open to the next, remember: you are not lost. You are walking with an ancient compass—your Ori.
Offer to it, speak to it, trust it.
Let this Christmas be not only a celebration of outer joy, but an act of inner devotion, as our ancestors did long before red ornaments and electric stars.
Traditional Blessing
May your Ori accept your offering.
May your Ebó open your roads.
May the light of wisdom dwell in your home.
And may your feet never walk where your spirit cannot thrive.
Ẹ kú Kérésìmesì.
A blessed Christmas to you, in the spirit of tradition.
Àṣẹ,
and stay rooted.

DAILY IFÁ
DAILY IFA ACADEMY: This Sunday we go deep with Òfún Méjì into a topic most people misunderstand: giving can become spiritual debt.
Not every gift is “good karma.” Some gifts stay open—like an unpaid account—creating silent obligations, resentment, fatigue, and even prosperity leaks. In this deep dive, you’ll learn how Ifá reads the difference between a social gift and Ebó (a spiritual act that closes what’s open), and why your Orí must approve what your hands give.
Supporting subscribers also receive a compact, practical “Closure Kit”—a fast method to seal your giving so it blesses you instead of draining you.
