When the Gods Say No: The Sacred Power of Refusal in Ifá Wisdom

How true spiritual insight emerges not from agreement, but from the dance between Yes and No.

Dear Readers;

At the crossroads where wisdom whispers and the ego demands, how do we know when to say Yes—or when to walk away?

The German philosopher Jürgen Habermas once said:

“In the Yes, in which rational insight prevails, a No must always be implied.”

While this may sound abstract, it mirrors something deeply familiar to those initiated in the traditions of Ifá and the Òrìṣà: the path of wisdom is never linear. There is no sacred “Yes” without the shadow of a meaningful “No.”

This is not just philosophy—it’s a cornerstone of divination, community, and spiritual decision-making in our traditions.

Ọ̀rúnmìlà and the Truth Behind the No

Let us turn to a powerful myth from Ogunda Meji, an Odu where Ọ̀rúnmìlà was consulted by a group of people preparing for a journey. They asked if they should proceed. The divination warned them to wait, but the group pressured Ọ̀rúnmìlà for a favorable answer. “Surely,” they said, “If the signs are unclear, we can go ahead in faith.”

But Ọ̀rúnmìlà stood firm. He said No. Not because he wished to block them, but because he saw the unseen—storms on the road, betrayal among friends, and a spiritual debt unpaid.

They went anyway. And every step confirmed what Ọ̀rúnmìlà had foreseen.

This myth teaches us that a wise No is not a rejection—it’s divine protection. In Ifá, a “No” is not a closing of doors, but a pause at the gate. A moment to reflect, redirect, and realign with Àṣẹ.

The Dialectic of Spirit: When Agreement is Earned, Not Forced

Habermas' insight—that a meaningful Yes must contain the possibility of a No—echoes the core of communicative action. Similarly, in Ifá divination, consensus is never imposed. We seek Ìtẹ́fà, the falling of the tray, the casting of sacred palm nuts—not to command the Òrìṣà, but to listen.

If you’ve ever had a divination where the message was not what you hoped, but exactly what you needed, then you’ve encountered this dialectic. In fact, the proverb from Ogunda Meji reminds us:

"A kì í bọ̀ lórí àbọ̀ tó bá yàtò sí ti Ọ̀rúnmìlà."
“One does not offer a different sacrifice than that of Ọ̀rúnmìlà.”
(Even in disagreement, divine insight must be honored.)
