Depression Is Not Weakness, But It Is Dangerous

Dear children of destiny,

There are days when the sky feels like stone. When joy seems distant, and even the sweet songs of morning birds fall on deaf ears. This state—known in the modern world as DEPRESSION—has long been understood in the sacred language of Ifá, though under different names.

Orunmilá teaches us that when the soul forgets its orí, when one’s inner world becomes flooded with darkness, we must not shame it—we must listen, then respond with care.

The Story from Odu – Òyèkú Méjì: The Day Light Refused to Shine

In Òyèkú Méjì, we find the story of a once-vibrant hunter who began to lose his will. Food lost its taste. Music hurt his ears. He slept often, not from rest but escape.

His village called him lazy. But Orunmila knew better.

He divined and saw that the hunter’s Orí had become weighed down by ancestral sorrow and internalized guilt. Life's trials had built up like storm clouds, and his inner fire had no room to breathe.

The prescribed remedy was not a command to “snap out of it,” but a call to realignment:

  • A bath with leaves of joy and clarity

  • An offering to Egungun, to lift inherited sadness

  • A deep prayer at dawn, facing the rising sun

This is where Ifá differs from modern thinking—it tells us that depression is not personal failure, but a blockage of spiritual circulation.

Spiritual Insight: What Ifá Says About the Shadow Within

In the Odu Òyèkú Méjì, darkness (òkùnkùn) is not evil—it is the place where rebirth begins. Depression is sometimes the shadow that precedes your rising, like dawn hiding behind thick clouds.

But prolonged darkness must be addressed. When you ignore depression, you risk losing connection with Orí, the very center of your life-force. And when Orí is forgotten, destiny becomes a maze.

As the proverb says:

Orí tó bímọ burúkú, kó mọ pé kì í fi ara rẹ̀ dá
The head that births sorrow forgets it is sacred.

Reflection and Gentle Questions:

  • Are you speaking kindly to yourself—or has your inner voice turned against you?

  • What grief or shame have you carried for too long?

  • Have you allowed others’ silence or misunderstanding to deepen your pain?

Beloved, know this: Depression is not who you are. It is a fog—but fogs lift.

Coming Up in the Section for Supporting Members: Rituals of Light for the Darkened Soul

In the full teaching for supporting subscribers, I’ll share:

  • A sacred dawn prayer to Orí and Ọba-Ìná, Orisha of inner light

  • A gentle bath to lift sorrow and restore emotional clarity

  • A step-by-step guide to connect with Egungun (ancestral spirits) for emotional healing

  • Use of EWE ORISA “Heart & Spirit” scent to support the ritual

You are not alone. Your Orí still remembers your light. Let each bath, each word, each silence be a soft return home.

Àláfíà ni yóò tàn yín – Peace will shine on you again.

A Personal Note for Those Deep in the Struggle

If you are truly suffering—so much so that even reading or preparing a ritual feels too heavy—please know: you are not alone, and you are not forgotten.

In cases where a proper Bòrí ceremony with a local Babalorixá or Iyalorixá is not accessible, I offer something more intimate. I have a private ritual I often use within my spiritual space for those experiencing profound depression. It is gentle, deeply ancestral, and designed with care. Because of its nature, I do not publish it publicly.

But if you feel called, you may write to me confidentially. I will send you the instructions for free, no subscription or payments or follow-ups required. This is my way of honoring the sacred promise of this path: to care for those who are walking in darkness until they can find their light again.
