Àṣẹ Tí Yóò Gbé Ọ Lẹ̀ Kúrò Ní Iṣẹ́
When the Power That Should Lift You Drains You

Dear devotees of the path,

We live in a world that rewards constant motion. Sleep less, achieve more. Push harder, stay productive. But in our sacred traditions, we know better: anything not in alignment with Àṣẹ becomes destruction—first slow, then sudden.

Today, let us speak truthfully about something many of you have written to me about: BURNOUT.

Yes, burnout is real—even for spiritual people. Especially for spiritual people. Caretakers of the community, healers, diviners, parents, priests—many of us wear invisible capes while quietly unraveling inside.

The Myth from Ifá: The Babaláwo Who Forgot Himself

In Odu Ogbè Méjì, there is a parable of a Babaláwo renowned across many towns. He was wise, generous, and seemingly tireless. From dawn till night, he cast Ifá, performed rituals, helped others solve their deepest dilemmas. But he neglected one thing—he never made ebo for himself.

His Orí, once bright and full of vision, began to dim. He stopped dreaming. His clients noticed he was less sharp, less present. Eventually, he became ill—not of body, but of soul. And when Orunmila was consulted, he revealed the truth:

"Ẹ̀dá tí ó fẹ́ gbà gbogbo ayé là, kó gbà àtọkànwá rẹ̀."
"He who tries to carry the whole world forgets his own balance."

The cure? A special offering to his Orí. Time away. Silence. Rituals of renewal. Only then did his clarity return.

What Burnout Really Means in Ifá

In Ifá, we do not speak of "productivity" like the modern world does. We speak of alignment with destiny. Burnout is a symptom of misalignment. It means your Orí is weary, disconnected, or being pulled in too many directions.

This isn't just about work. Burnout can come from:

  • Emotional overgiving

  • Staying in relationships that suffocate your spirit

  • Saying yes when your Orí is screaming no

When your personal Àṣẹ is drained, everything becomes heavy. You lose your joy, your patience, your intuition. You forget who you are.

As Orunmila teaches:

Orí tó gbà ebo la fi ń bá ayé lọ
Only a head that accepts sacrifice can journey well through life."
- Odu Irosun Meji

Practical Wisdom: Reclaiming Your Light

When was the last time you:

  • Spoke lovingly to your Orí?

  • Gave yourself permission to say “not today”?

  • Took rest as seriously as ritual?

Rest is not laziness. Rest is a sacred act of remembering who you are.
