Spiritual Homework: Are You Doing Yours?
When the Harvest Doesn’t Come: A lesson from Orunmila on the missing piece in your spiritual journey.
To all walking the sacred path, dear Community,
Have you ever felt like you were doing everything right—consulting Ifá, making ebó, even participating in initiations—yet life still seemed stuck? This is a question many bring to the Orisha shrines: “Baba, why are things not moving forward?”
The answer often lies not in the heavens, but in our hands.
Ifá is clear: it is not enough to make ebó and wait for miracles. We must also do our spiritual homework.
In the sacred Odu Òtúrá Méjì, Ifá says:
“It is what we nurture that grows.”
There is a story from this Odu that Orunmila once told of two farmers. Both came to him complaining that their fields were barren. Orunmila divined for each man, and the Ifá revealed that both must make ebó to remove the obstacles blocking their harvest.
The first farmer made his offering and returned home with renewed hope. But he did not clear the weeds from his fields, nor water his plants. He told himself, “Orunmila will provide.”
The second farmer also made his ebó. But he rose at dawn each day to clear the weeds, chase away pests, and water his fields.
When the rains finally came, the second farmer’s land was lush and full. The first farmer’s field, left untended, was overrun by weeds and decay.
Orunmila told them:
“Ebó is the seed. Your effort is the water. Without both, no harvest will come.”
How often do we act like the first farmer? We make ebó or light a candle, but do we follow through? Do we work on our character, improve our habits, and actively walk the path that Ifá has opened for us?
Spiritual homework isn’t glamorous, but it is essential. It might mean:
Daily prayer or meditation to connect with your Ori (inner head)
Practicing honesty and integrity, even when it is hard
Keeping your promises to yourself and others
Maintaining a clean and orderly home and altar
Consistent offerings of gratitude, not just requests
Ifá is not a vending machine of miracles. It is a system of alignment and growth. When we do our part, the blessings that are already destined for us can finally manifest.
In the private section of today’s newsletter, I will share a powerful yet simple ritual to align your Ori with Orunmila’s wisdom, helping you strengthen your self-discipline and spiritual consistency.
Because when you nurture your destiny, your destiny nurtures you.
"Alafia fun gbogbo yin" – Peace to you all.
Stay blessed, and may your steps be steady. Àṣẹ.
