Laughter is the Sweetest Medicine: The Role of Humor in Ifá and Orisha Tradition
Discover the Healing Power of Joy Through Proverbs, Odu Ifá, and Stories of Orisha
Dear Devotees,
Ẹ káàbọ̀ o! As the year’s first days unfold, let us pause to reflect on a gift often overlooked yet powerful enough to heal wounds we cannot see: laughter. The Yorùbá tradition, deeply rooted in the wisdom of Ifá and the teachings of the Orishá, recognizes humor as a sacred tool—a bridge between the human and the divine.
"Ẹnu rẹ máa ṣe ohun tí inú rẹ kò mọ̀, bí o bá n rẹrin?"
("Your mouth cannot hide your heart when you laugh.")
Ọ̀sẹ́ Otúrá, an Odu that celebrates the duality of seriousness and joy.
In this month’s reflection, we’ll explore how humor, light-heartedness, and joy are essential spiritual practices, backed by proverbs, stories from the Odu Ifá, and teachings from Orishá known for their playful wisdom.
Laughter in Ifá Tradition
In Ifá, laughter is not frivolous; it is a spiritual release, a way to restore harmony when tension builds. Ejiogbe, the first Odu Ifá, reminds us of the cyclical nature of life: joy and sorrow are intertwined, but it is through humor that we often find the strength to endure hardship.
"Eni ti o le rẹrin, ko le yọ."
(“The one who cannot laugh cannot truly rejoice.”)
This Yoruba saying highlights the transformative power of laughter—it paves the way for genuine happiness.
The Trickster's Wisdom: Eṣù's Laughter
No discussion of humor in the Yorùbá cosmology would be complete without honoring Eṣù-Elegbara, the Orishá of communication, crossroads, and divine mischief. Eṣù is often depicted as a jester-like figure whose tricks are not mere pranks but lessons in disguise.
In one famous myth of Eṣù and the Divided Cloth, a village was paralyzed by arguments. Neighbors accused each other of stealing crops, spreading rumors, and neglecting communal duties. The Orisha Èṣù observed the escalating tension and devised a plan to expose their folly.
One morning, Èṣù walked through the center of the village wearing a hat divided into two colors: one side red, the other blue. He greeted the villagers warmly but said nothing unusual. As he passed, the villagers began to argue.
“He wore a red hat!” said one.
“No, it was blue!” argued another.
The debate grew so heated that people stormed to the elders for judgment. Laughing, Èṣù appeared and revealed his hat's dual colors, showing both sides to the crowd. The villagers laughed at their stubbornness and realized their quarrels were often just as foolish. The laughter dissolved their tension, and peace returned.
Lesson: This story, rooted in the Odu Ìká Méjì, reminds us that humor often dismantles rigid thinking. Eṣù teaches that laughter can humble us, making room for understanding and growth. When life feels like a battlefield of egos, could laughter be the first step toward reconciliation?
Ọbàtálá’s Irony: The Wisdom of Quiet Laughter
Another story tells of Ọbàtálá’s quiet humor. In this tale, two brothers approached him with a question about justice. Each insisted the other was in the wrong. Rather than provide an immediate answer, Ọbàtálá handed each of them a long piece of cloth and told them to make robes that fit perfectly.
Confused but obedient, they spent hours measuring, cutting, and sewing. When they returned, they noticed that their robes didn’t fit properly—but the other’s robe did. As they laughed at their mistake, Ọbàtálá explained: "Justice is often about seeing how you fit into another’s situation."
Lesson: Ọbàtálá teaches us that humor softens rigid perspectives, allowing us to approach life’s complexities with humility and grace.
Ọṣun’s Laughter: Joy as an Act of Seduction and Power
Ọṣun, known for her beauty and charisma, is also revered for her playful humor. In one tale, the Orisha gathered to discuss a critical issue, but Ọṣun noticed their seriousness was creating tension. She began to dance, laugh, and tease them until the room filled with joy. As their spirits lifted, the Orisha realized the solution to their problem was simpler than they thought.
Ọṣun’s laughter isn’t just playful—it’s strategic. She uses joy to unlock creativity, build relationships, and inspire action.
Lesson: Laughter can be a tool of empowerment, allowing us to shift energy, lighten burdens, and spark innovation.
The Healing Power of Laughter
"Ẹni tí ó rẹrin nígbà ìṣòro, yó rí wí pé gbogbo ìṣòro ló máa lọ."
("The one who laughs during trouble will live to see the trouble pass.") - Eji Ogbe
"Ẹrọkéró, ẹni tí ó fẹ́ ẹ̀gbẹ́, kó gba ẹlẹ́gbẹ́ rẹ̀ lárin ọwọ́."
("One who teases the group must also laugh along with the group.") - Ògúndá Méjì
When life weighs us down, laughter lightens the load. Modern science agrees: laughter reduces stress hormones, improves heart health, and boosts immune function. But Ifá goes further, suggesting that laughter strengthens the spirit, aligning us with our Ori and allowing blessings to flow more freely. These proverbs show that laughter is a communal act, meant to bind us together and remind us of life’s impermanence.
Practical Ways to Invite More Laughter into Your Life
Invoke Eṣù Before a Serious Task: When faced with challenges, light a small offering to Eṣù and invite his playful energy to guide you through with creativity and resilience.
Celebrate Òṣun’s Light: Dedicate time to activities that make you genuinely happy—dancing, storytelling, or spending time with loved ones.
Reframe Challenges: When tension arises, ask yourself: "What would Eṣù find funny about this situation?" Shifting perspectives might reveal unexpected humor.
Dear devotees, as we navigate the complexities of life, may we embrace humor as a divine gift. Laugh often, even in the face of adversity, and remember the wisdom of the Orishá: joy is not frivolous; it is essential.
"A cheerful heart is a sanctuary where the Orishá dwell."
Àṣẹ!
Stay blessed and keep laughing,
