Travelers on the Road of Destiny,

There is a truth in Ifá that many of us would rather avoid because it holds up a mirror we don’t always want to face:

👉 Your emotions don’t define your character. Your actions do.

Let that sink in. You are allowed to feel anything—anger, jealousy, grief, even rage—but if you allow those feelings to push you into words and actions that betray your values, you lose the very thing that anchors your life: Ìwà Pẹ̀lẹ́ (good character).

The Myth That Teaches It All

In the sacred Odu Òfún Méjì, we are told that Ìwà (good character) was once Orunmila’s wife.

But Orunmila, wise as he was, had a temper. He grew impatient with Ìwà’s calm and steady ways. One day, after a harsh word, Ìwà left.

Suddenly, Orunmila’s life unraveled. His divinations failed, his clients disappeared, his wealth scattered. He searched high and low, begging Ìwà to return. When he finally found her, she told him:

“I will come back only if you treat me with respect and patience. Lose me again, and all will be lost.”

This was not a marriage in the human sense—it was a teaching for all of us. When we dishonor Ìwà Pẹ̀lẹ́, life falls apart, no matter how gifted we are, no matter how much we pray or sacrifice.

The Real Difference Between Feelings and Actions

We all feel anger, sadness, envy, fear. That is natural.

But what we do next is where our character is revealed.

  • If anger visits, do you throw the stone or take a breath?

  • If jealousy whispers, do you undermine someone or use it as motivation to rise?

  • If sadness weighs you down, do you retreat into self-destruction or ask for help?

Yoruba elders remind us:

"Ìwà l’ẹ̀ṣin."
("Character is the true religion.")

It’s not enough to attend ceremonies or give offerings if our actions poison the world around us.

A Simple Practice

The next time a strong feeling hits, pause and ask:
“If Ìwà were standing beside me, would this action honor her?”

You may still feel the fire, but you’ll choose a response that won’t burn down your own house.

Why This Matters for You

When you keep Ìwà close, your path clears. Opportunities open. Relationships deepen. Even your emotions transform into sources of power rather than destruction.

But when we lose Ìwà—when we let feelings dictate reckless actions—we block our own destiny.

👉 This is why Ifá teaches that good character is beauty, and beauty attracts all blessings.

Closing Blessing

“Walk gently, for Ìwà walks with you. When you honor her, the world honors you in return.”

May every action you take this week reflect the beauty of your true self.

Mo júbà Ìwà Pẹ̀lẹ́. Mo júbà gbogbo ẹ̀mí rere tó ń dáàbò bo ọ̀nà wa.
(I pay homage to Good Character. I pay homage to all good spirits that protect our path.
)

Walk blessed,
