If I Did Not Exist, Would I Be Missed?
Exploring Purpose and Legacy in the Light of Ifá Wisdom
Dear Honored Companions on the Path,
Imagine this: you wake up one morning, with the question lingering in your mind:
“If I did not exist, would I be missed?”
It’s an unsettling thought, one that digs into two deep questions of existence. First, it asks us to ponder the purpose of our lives—what are we here to contribute? Secondly, it wonders about the nature of our impact: Would the world be any different without us?
The sacred Odu Ifá, Òtúrá Méjì, offers a timeless story that explores this dual nature of purpose and absence. In this tale, Òtúrá seeks Orunmila, burdened by doubts. He asks, “If I am here only to vanish someday, what lasting meaning does my life have?” Orunmila, with his gentle wisdom, replies,
“The leaf that falls from the iroko tree is the same that nourishes the soil.”
Even in absence, there is a legacy, a subtle yet enduring mark that no one else can replicate.
Would the World Be Different Without Me?
To wonder if the world would be any different without us is not uncommon. Yet Ifá teaches that every soul is bound to life with a distinct purpose, like each leaf on the vast iroko, integral to the harmony of existence. Like the iroko’s fallen leaf, we nourish the earth even when we’re unseen or absent. Our contributions may not always be celebrated, but they are vital to the fabric of life itself.
The Yoruba proverb,
“Bí aláro ṣe kú láàtàn, ayé o tún bọ ara,”
“Even if the dye-maker dies, life will find another way to color the cloth,”
acknowledges that while life will go on, every soul holds a color, a shade, that is irreplaceable. Even though the cloth of life will keep weaving, our specific hue, our unique contributions, add vibrancy that cannot simply be replicated.
Why Our Existence Matters
Ifá suggests that the purpose of each soul’s journey is unique, shaping the world in ways often beyond our perception. Here are a few lessons inspired by Ifá that reveal why each of us matters, not just to those we know, but to the entire balance of life.
1. Each of Us Embodies a Unique Ori, a Distinct Path
Every soul carries an Ori, or spiritual head, guiding it along a specific path. When we embrace our Ori, we honor a singular purpose that no one else can fulfill. Orunmila teaches that when we walk with our Ori, we align with the universe’s design, enriching the lives of others and the cosmic rhythm in ways that are uniquely ours.
2. Our Absence Leaves an Invisible Mark
The influence of our actions, words, and energy often surpasses our awareness. Like a stone dropped into a river, the ripple effect of our presence reaches beyond the immediate circle of family and friends, shaping lives we may never know. We may never hear about the stranger uplifted by a kind word or see the way our wisdom inspired another’s choice. Yet, as in the saying from Òtúrá Méjì, “Our essence is like the wind—unseen but felt,” our legacy is woven into the lives we touch, consciously or unconsciously.
3. We Contribute to the Legacy of Those Who Came Before Us
We are extensions of our ancestors, carrying forward their wisdom, dreams, and courage. Through us, their stories live on and continue to inspire. If we did not exist, we would take with us an entire lineage of teachings, wisdom, and spiritual gifts meant to enrich the world. We are each a bridge, and our absence would leave a gap in the lineage that only our presence can fill.
4. The World Feels Our Presence, and It Feels Our Absence
In Òtúrá Méjì, Orunmila speaks of awe, the spiritual energy each of us brings, like an ember from a shared fire. If any of us were to vanish, that flame would be diminished. We carry something sacred and unique—our gifts, our laughter, our challenges, and our wisdom. The absence of even a single ember lessens the fire’s warmth for everyone gathered around it.
Leaving a Lasting Legacy: What Can We Do?
Ifá teaches us that each action is a thread in the vast tapestry of creation. Here are a few ways to make our lives resonate more deeply, ensuring that our absence, should it ever come, leaves the world richer for our having been here.
Honor Your Unique Gifts: Embrace what makes you unique—whether it’s the way you think, create, or help others. When you honor your gifts, you contribute a distinct energy that feeds and strengthens the world around you.
Serve with Humility and Intent: Each act of kindness, each moment of listening, creates a lasting impact. Serve others from the heart, with humility, and know that even the smallest act can echo for generations.
Remember the Ancestors: Connect with the wisdom of those who came before. By honoring them, we connect with their purpose and allow it to flow through us, leaving an unbroken lineage of purpose and strength for those who will come after.
Build Loving Relationships: The Yoruba proverb “Àgbàlagbà t'orí ire ni Orí tóò sí” teaches that maturity is a path to fortune. Cultivating mature and loving relationships allows us to offer strength and support that can endure even after we are gone.
A Final Thought: Embracing the Fullness of Our Existence
In contemplating the question, “If I did not exist, would I be missed?” we can find peace in knowing that our lives, whether visible or unseen, contribute to the beautiful, interconnected mystery of existence. Each of us is like the leaf that falls, nourishing the earth so that new life may continue to grow.
So, dear devotees, as you walk your unique path, remember: You matter more than you might ever know. Your essence, your presence, and yes—even your absence—shape this world. Embrace your journey, and let your spirit dance with purpose, courage, and gratitude, knowing that in each moment, you make a difference.
Stay blessed, and may your spirit’s light shine brightly within the eternal dance of creation.
