To those who carry light in their gaze,

In the Ifá tradition, to truly see someone is more than a social courtesy—it is a sacred act, a moment of spiritual alignment. And to be seen? That is to feel whole in the presence of another.

When we say “I see you,” we echo Ọlọ́run, the Creator, who saw all things into being. Today’s wisdom offering explores this divine principle of mutual recognition: how to offer it, how to receive it, and how to remove the veils that keep us unseen, even by ourselves.

Seeing as a Sacred Power

Among the Yoruba, sight is a symbol of divine perception. Orisha Òṣun is often called “the Eye of Ọbàtálá” because she sees not only with beauty, but with truth. It is she who notices what others overlook, who senses the pain beneath pride, the wisdom beneath silence.

In the myth of Otura Meji, it was a young, disregarded voice that brought salvation to the elders. Orunmila saw the value in this overlooked child, proving that divine sight is not about titles—it is about truthful attention.

“Even a whisper can carry the voice of Olódùmarè.” – Otura Meji

Why Being Seen Matters

In many African traditions, particularly among the Yoruba, to be seen is to be acknowledged by the universe. The word “mo ri e” (I see you) carries an energy of validation and connection. It says: You exist, and your presence matters.

Children grow with stronger Orí when they are seen. Relationships flourish. Even healing accelerates. And this principle shows up over and over in the sacred Odù.

The Impact: On the One Who Sees, and the One Who is Seen

From the Odu Ogbe Meji, we learn of the tale where Ọ̀rúnmìlà healed a blind and crippled man at the market—not through medicine, but through acknowledgment. He saw his inner potential before others could, and that recognition brought about transformation. He gave him back his identity before giving him his cure.

“The one who sees with the heart changes what the eyes cannot.”
– Ifá proverb, derived from Ogbe Meji.

Those who see others become vessels for Àṣẹ. They give energy. They honor the divine spark in others. But the one being seen also receives the medicine of the soul—dignity, love, and the courage to be authentic. To be seen is to feel safe. It’s to be held in a gaze that doesn’t shrink or distort you.

What Do We Need To Feel Seen?

According to the sacred teachings of Irosun Meji, we are seen through our stories, our trials, and how others hold space for them. In one myth, Orunmila is tested by Obatalá, who wants to see if he truly understands the struggles of the people—not just by prophecy, but by empathy.

To feel seen, a person must feel:

  • That they are listened to without judgment.

  • That their intentions are honored, even when their actions falter.

  • That their essence is reflected back with love, not ego.

This is not flattery. This is recognition.

The Gaze of Òṣun: See Beyond the Veil

Òṣun teaches us to look past appearances. In a myth from Ose Meji, she removed the enchantment from a cursed man by washing his face with marigold water—revealing the prince beneath the beast.

We can take from this the message that what we recognize, we restore. And sometimes, the one we must recognize first… is ourselves.
