Hope and Faith in Ifá: Two Wings of the Same Bird
Guidance from Odù Ifá on how to carry light in darkness and walk with trust, even when the path disappears.
Ọmọ Awo, Ẹ ku ìwààsù!
(Devoted one of Ifá, blessings upon your spiritual journey and teachings)
In these sacred days between dusk and dawn, may we ask: What carries you—Hope, or Faith? Ifá says: both. Let us see why...
In this season of transitions—between years, between challenges, between old selves and new ones—we pause to reflect on two powerful forces that keep our inner world in motion: Hope and Faith.
While they walk hand-in-hand, they are not the same. In the sacred texts of Ifá, Hope (Ìrètí) is the flame we carry in the dark, while Faith (Ìgbàgbọ́) is the trust that there is indeed a path underfoot, even when we cannot see it. One lifts the heart. The other steadies the step.
Let’s walk with them.
Hope Looks Up, Faith Steps Forward
In the Odù Òg̀bè, we meet the one who said “Yes” to being born. It was not certainty that made Orí descend—it was trust. That was Faith. But the joy of imagining life on Earth—that was Hope.
Hope is aspiration. It lives in the longing of the barren woman in Òg̀bè who plants a seed despite many miscarriages, and in the traveler who waits in Òtúrá for the river to remember its promise.
Faith, on the other hand, is commitment. It shows itself in Òkànràn, where the babaláwo performs the ebó even when mocked. He doesn’t know if the “gods” will answer, but he acts because he believes.
A Parable from Irosun: The Doubt of Orúnmìlà
In Ìròsùn, we learn of a moment when even Orúnmìlà doubted. He had given so much, but Ayé had not responded. “Am I forgotten?” he asked. Eṣù whispered: “Do not confuse silence with absence.”
Orúnmìlà lit a small lamp and continued. That lamp was Hope. His continued divination was Faith.
The Risk of Hope, The Covenant of Faith
Hope exposes us. It asks us to want. To desire love, health, prosperity—even when life has denied us before. That’s why Òsá reminds us that Hope must be wise, lest we chase illusions.
Faith is not naïve, either. In Òfún, it is the covenant we make with our Orí, our community, our lineage. It doesn’t guarantee ease, but it anchors us in purpose.
