Few topics stir as much emotion and reflection as the question of abortion. It is a deeply personal decision, often tied to circumstances that are as unique as the individuals involved. In Ifá, life is revered as sacred, yet so too are the concepts of destiny (Ìpín), free will (Àṣẹ), and personal responsibility. Ifá does not approach abortion with condemnation but with guidance that emphasizes reflection, ritual, and spiritual connection to honor all facets of life.
How Ifá Views the Question of Life
Life, in the Ifá tradition, begins before physical birth. The spirit of the unborn, or Ẹmi ọmọ, exists in the spiritual realm and has its own destiny. The Odu Ifá Ìrosùn Méjì teaches that before a soul is sent to the physical world, it kneels before Olódùmarè to agree to its life mission. Yet, even with this sacred agreement, humans are given Àṣẹ, the power to make choices, including those regarding whether and when to bring life into the world.
This duality—the sacredness of life and the gift of choice—lies at the heart of Ifá’s perspective on abortion.
Freedom to Decide: The Roles of the Mother and Father
In Ifá, the mother is seen as the primary gateway for bringing life into the world. Her body, spirit, and circumstances are all vital considerations in any decision about pregnancy. The Odu Ifá Ògúndá Méjì recounts a story where a woman consults Ifá about whether to bring a child into a challenging environment. The guidance she receives emphasizes her autonomy and the importance of carefully weighing her situation and capacity.
While the father’s role is also significant, his responsibility is to support the mother and consider the shared spiritual and material readiness for raising a child. Together, their decision is ideally made through consultation with Ifá to understand the spiritual implications and align their actions with their destinies.
The Myth of Ògúndá Méjì: A Woman’s Choice and the Wisdom of Ifá
In the verses of Ògúndá Méjì, there is a poignant tale about a young woman named Adétútù who faced a heart-wrenching dilemma. Adétútù was known for her beauty and kindness, and her family regarded her as a blessing. She became engaged to a hardworking farmer named Òjé, and together, they dreamed of building a life filled with joy, prosperity, and children.
Shortly after their marriage, Adétútù discovered she was pregnant. Though she and Òjé were overjoyed at first, their circumstances grew increasingly dire. Òjé’s crops had failed for the second year in a row, and they were struggling to feed themselves. Adétútù began to worry: how could they provide for a child when they were barely surviving?
In her distress, Adétútù visited the Babaláwo, who cast Ifá for her. The Odu Ògúndá Méjì appeared, and its message was clear: Adétútù’s pregnancy was not coincidental. The child she carried had a powerful destiny. However, the verse also acknowledged the gravity of her concerns. Ògúndá Méjì emphasized that while life is sacred, the choice to bring it into the world must be made with wisdom and intention.
Adétútù was torn. Òjé supported whatever decision she felt was right but reminded her of their shared struggles. Together, they performed ẹbọ (sacrificial offering) to Òṣun, the Òrìṣà of fertility, to seek clarity. The Babaláwo advised Adétútù that if she decided not to continue with the pregnancy, she must perform specific rituals to honor the child’s spirit, ensuring its peaceful return to the ancestral realm.
After deep reflection, Adétútù made the difficult choice to terminate the pregnancy. She followed the prescribed rituals, lighting candles and pouring libations while offering prayers of gratitude for the child’s brief presence. Through these acts, she found healing and connection, knowing the spirit would return at the right time, either to her or another family.
Years later, after Òjé’s farm began to thrive, Adétútù became pregnant again. This time, she carried her child to term. Her firstborn, a boy, grew to be a respected leader in their community, fulfilling the destiny foretold by Ifá.
Interpretation of Ògúndá Méjì
The myth of Ògúndá Méjì delves into themes of choice, responsibility, and spiritual connection. It offers profound insights into how Ifá views the intersection of life and freedom.
1. The Sacredness of Life
Ifá recognizes life as a divine gift. The unborn child in Adétútù’s story carried a powerful destiny, emphasizing that even life not yet realized holds sacred significance. However, Ifá does not see this sacredness as a reason to strip individuals of their agency.
2. The Role of Free Will
The Odu highlights the importance of Àṣẹ—the power to decide and manifest outcomes. Adétútù’s consultation with Ifá and her subsequent decision demonstrate that while Ifá provides guidance, it ultimately respects human freedom to choose.
3. Honoring Spiritual Relationships
The myth emphasizes the relationship between the physical and spiritual realms. Adétútù’s rituals ensured the child’s spirit was honored, avoiding spiritual imbalance. This approach underscores the Ifá teaching that even difficult decisions should be made with reverence and responsibility.
4. Timing and Readiness
Ògúndá Méjì also teaches about timing. Adétútù’s initial decision allowed her to prioritize stability, enabling her to bring life into the world under better circumstances. This reflects the Yoruba concept of ìfaradà, or patience, which is often necessary to align with destiny.
Guidance from Ifá on Considering Abortion
Consult Ifá for Clarity: A divination session can offer insights into the unborn child’s destiny, the circumstances of the parents, and the spiritual consequences of the decision.
Reflect on Readiness: Ifá teaches the importance of alignment—spiritual, emotional, and material readiness. This ensures that life is brought into the world with dignity and purpose.
Honor the Unborn Soul: If the choice is made to terminate a pregnancy, Ifá emphasizes the importance of honoring the spirit of the unborn child. Rituals can help ensure the child’s peaceful return to the spiritual realm.
The Role of Rituals in Healing and Honor
In Ifá, rituals provide a way to address difficult choices with respect and healing. For pregnancies that do not result in birth, whether through choice or circumstance, rituals can honor the spirit and allow the parents to process their emotions.
Ẹbọ (Offering): Perform a ritual offering to Olódùmarè or the appropriate Òrìṣà, such as Òṣun, who governs fertility and maternal care, to honor the unborn and seek spiritual harmony.
Naming the Unborn: Some traditions encourage giving a name to the unborn child as a way to acknowledge their presence and destiny.
Community and Support: Engage in communal rituals or counseling with trusted elders to process feelings of grief, guilt, or uncertainty.
Ifá’s Perspective on Judgment
Ifá does not impose judgment on those who face the question of abortion. It recognizes that life is complex and that each choice carries its own spiritual weight. Instead of punitive measures, Ifá offers tools for understanding, healing, and honoring the sacredness of all life, including the lives of the parents.
The Odu Ifá Èjì Ogbe reminds us:
"Ayé jẹ́ àjọṣe, gbogbo wa ní lárà."
(Life is about collaboration; we all share responsibility.)
